We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new Outdoor Learning Programme. As an institution committed to providing a holistic and enriching education, we believe that learning goes beyond the walls of the classroom. Our Outdoor Learning Programme aims to offer students a unique and valuable learning experience that fosters personal growth, enhances academic skills, and nurtures a deep connection with nature.
Why Outdoor Learning?
At Glenalmond, we recognize the immense benefits of outdoor education in shaping well-rounded individuals. Outdoor learning allows students to engage with the world around them, encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. It provides an opportunity for hands-on experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of subjects and concepts through real-world applications. Additionally, spending time in nature promotes physical well-being, mental health, and overall happiness.
What We Offer:
Pupils will have the opportunity to complete the John Muir Award, allowing them to take ownership of a local area and improve the natural environment where possible. A weekly eco group will develop our fantastic site improving nature and developing their understanding of the local environment.
Pupils have the opportunity to complete Bronze, Silver, and Gold DofE while at Glenlamond, and benefit from the all-around experience DofE offers, as well as the exciting expeditions.
Glenalmond is one of two schools in the country to be able to offer the Mountain Training Skills Awards. These awards are open to all pupils and will be offered through the games programme and Sunday activities.
Most Sunday outdoor activities will take place in the amazing Scottish Highlands, from canoeing to winter mountaineering, pupils will have the opportunity to develop their skills across a range of activities.
Mountain Biking will take its place in the senior games programme, cycling in both the local area and at trail centres. Pupils will enhance their fitness, skills, develop trails and learn about bike maintenance.
Rock climbing is already embedded into the games programme at Glenalmond where pupils can learn not only the skills to become competent independent climbers, but to compete in competitions also. There are approximately 12 venues within an hour of Glenalmond offering both sport and traditional climbing, when wet weather persists the facility at the UHI in Perth can be used. In December 2023 Glenalmond is hosting a rock climbing trip to Spain.
In the Third Form, all pupils will have the opportunity to rock climb, canoe on a loch, wild camp, complete a conservation project and climb a Munro on the adventure days.
