The 2024 Heartbreak Run at Glenalmond College will go down in history as a landmark event, with Harris Pagett, a former pupil and Scotland competitor, shattering the longstanding course record by nearly four minutes. Harris completed the gruelling 8.3-mile course, which includes over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, in an astonishing time of 50:37, eclipsing the previous record of 54:35 set in 2016 by Michael Lamb (U6th).
The Heartbreak Run, held annually on the final Sunday of the Michaelmas term, has become a cherished tradition since its inception in 2016. This year’s event, held on December 8th, attracted the largest field to date, with almost 70 runners braving the snow-covered moors and mountains of the Highlands. The diverse lineup included 23 boys, 32 girls, 3 OGs and 9 members of staff and even a four-legged competitor.
Beyond the impressive athletic achievements, this year’s run carried a charitable mission. As it stands one day after the event, it has raised over £900 for chosen charity, Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust through sponsorship contributions from friends and family.
Dr. Catharine Fleming, Glenalmond Chemistry and Biology teacher, cross country coach and race organiser, reflected on the success of the day:
"We were thrilled to have so many of our pupils, staff, and former pupils take part in this year’s Heartbreak Run – our biggest ever. The event epitomises resilience, endurance, and the Glenalmond spirit of pushing oneself to the limit. Harris’s record-breaking run was truly inspirational, and every participant should feel proud of their effort. Once the blisters have healed, the trainers have dried out and the muscles have recovered, we’ll already be looking ahead to next year. Well done to everyone who took part and supported this year's event."
First held with just 12 participants, the Heartbreak Run has grown year on year, cementing itself as a cornerstone of Glenalmond’s vibrant community. This year’s record-breaking achievement and the camaraderie among the runners made it a day to remember.
