Glenalmond College’s 1st XI football team made history this week, reaching the SISFA (Scottish Independent Schools Football Association) final for the first time. Facing a tough Gordonstoun side, the team delivered an outstanding performance, holding their opponents to a 1-1 draw at full-time before narrowly missing out in a penalty shootout.
After a thrilling semi-final victory last Thursday, we travelled to Alloa. Our starting 11, which was identical to the one that triumphed over the High School of Glasgow, stepped onto a larger pitch in glorious sunshine. The match was a testament to tactical discipline, especially as our back three worked tirelessly to keep a tight defence against a wave of skilled midfielders and swift attackers from the opposition.
Fedor emerged as a constant attacking menace, disrupting Gordonstoun’s rhythm and ultimately earning the Man of the Match award for his relentless efforts. The breakthrough came when Max delivered a precise long ball, allowing Timour to calmly finish past the keeper to put us ahead, 1-0 at half-time. Despite being pressed in the second half and a near miss from Max on several chances, the match took a dramatic turn when a sensational 30-yard half-volley from a Gordonstoun midfielder found the back of the net after a deflected crossbar challenge. With the final whistle, the scoreline was level at 1-1, sending the contest to penalties.
While the penalty shoot-out ultimately saw us fall at the final hurdle, the achievement of reaching a national final is monumental. This success is all the more impressive when compared with past results: only three years ago, the scores told a very different story.
We extend our thanks to Mr Heron for his relentless drive and to every member of the team who has contributed to this historic journey. While the final result may sting, the progress shown on the field offers a promising glimpse into the bright future of Glenalmond football and is a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and the spirit of our college.
